"If I wrote this book, it is to learn the lessons of a life spent with animals since early childhood, on the farm, then in the city. Throughout the pages, I will tell you about several of my friends to whom, however great my tributes, I will never be able to repay the happiness they gave me, with their candor and their humor: a young goat, an old parrot, cats, spiders, cattle or dogs.
Why do we treat pets, substitutes for humans, with such respect, and beasts for human consumption, meat-making machines, so poorly? While we consume billions of animals from the land and sea each year, it is time we came down from our pedestals to rediscover them, listen to them, and understand them.
I also wanted to launch an appeal for an end to the scandal of ritual slaughter, whether halal or kosher, which imposes unnecessary suffering on our sisters and brothers, the animals.
