Title : Jean Cavaillès - Mathematical Philosophy - Hourya Sinaceur - book
Summary :
Jean Cavaillès is one of the greatest representatives of the French School of History and Philosophy of Science. His work, early and tragically interrupted, nevertheless reached a pinnacle of thought. It is also endowed with a magnetism that outweighs its difficulty.
This essay approaches this work from its most disconcerting aspect: the arduous entanglement between mathematical or logical results in all their technical matrix and reflections anchored in the sources of philosophy. It patiently shows by what implicit detours the latter are grafted onto the former. Cavaillès had a remarkable understanding of what was new and significant in "modern" mathematics and wanted to inform the philosophical conception of rational thought. He overturned the field of epistemology, mainly occupied before him by idealist philosophies of consciousness. His philosophy of the concept is a philosophy without cogito , because thought is not an intuition or a form of reality, but itself a reality manifesting itself by the modes of production of its concepts.
