"Should we deprive the reader of the joy of discovering, detail by detail, the bottom line - if it really exists - of this double-bottomed machination, like the seemingly unsuspected suitcases concealing disturbing secrets? Certainly not. And yet, revealing everything from the outset would not be of capital importance, because with Insoupçonnable, we are not in one of those detective intrigues where knowing certain keys in advance, or even the outcome, spoils the pleasure. As in his three other novels, Tanguy Viel, who knows how to build suspense and does not hold back, is more deeply interested in something other than this narrative scheme. In the atmospheres, which he knows how to create remarkably well, in the places - the sea is often present, is it because he was born in Brest? -, to the objects, to the frightening, unimaginable behaviors that people who seem at first glance harmless can have, to their quirks, their family secrets, their unspeakable desires. A chic wedding by the sea: a nice start. Don't be fooled. The narrator, Sam, has just been a witness at his sister Lise's wedding to a rich man who is 50 years old - twice her age. Henri Delamare, the groom, a widower for some time, owns a family fortune, which he has managed to make grow. He is an auctioneer. Lise worked in a night bar frequented, discreetly, by very well-to-do gentlemen. She refused to make love, unlike others. However, it was only with her that Henri wanted to spend his evenings. And, one fine day, he asked her to marry him. Why did she accept, when she was living with a man? That's a whole part of the story. We quickly understand that Sam is a cheap brother and a real lover, Lise's, and that this marriage hides an unsuspected plan. Another case of the perfect crime, like the hold-up in The Absolute Perfection of Crime had to be perfect and without a drop of bloodshed. Here too, in principle, there will be no violence, just a clever way to recover money - what do you dream of when you are short of money? - and to escape to America, or rather to the States, as Lise says, trying to imitate the accent of the American stars. Of course, it will fail, but we will not tell you here how - and, ultimately, Tanguy Viel also asks you to guess it even more than he shows you. (Josyane Savigneau, Le Monde)
