After producing a few religiously inspired works in Zaragoza, Francisco Goya set out to conquer Madrid in 1775. He was 25 years old. A witness to everyday life in The Wounded Mason or The Grape Harvest, he also evoked the festivals and traditions of Spain in A Hunter and His Dogs or The Puppet. Painter of the Court and its gold from 1785, he lent his talent to kings, ministers, and princesses as well as to bullfighters, poets, and courtesans. His criticism of Spanish morals and politics, sharpened by his liberal friends, gave rise to the Caprices. His pictorial harangues reached their peak after 1805, with the French occupation and then the repression of the popular rebellion by the Napoleonic armies. In The Second and Third of May and The Disasters of War, he painted the abuse of power, the suffering of the Spanish people, and the bloodshed.
