Summary :
What are the "idols" that Nietzsche attacks and whose twilight he announces? They are, he tells us, the values forged by the Christian religion and imposed as the only truth. The task of the philosopher then consists of shedding light on the origin of these moral a priori. Values, once the error that makes us believe them to be universal has been demonstrated, ring hollow under the philosopher's hammer. For if he seeks less to destroy than to question and examine, his aim is indeed the overthrow of all values, to restore vigor and health to life, weakened by two millennia of Christianity. Twilight of the Idols and The Case of Wagner, which accompanies it, are the last two texts published with Nietzsche's approval, a few months before his crisis of dementia in January 1889. They constitute, as he wrote in a letter to Carl Fuchs dated September 9, 1888, "a perfect overall introduction to [his] philosophy."
