We are in Middleway, Kansas—called the little American Oxford—in the home of Gloria Patter, an influential Black academic, the day after the Witches of Middleway feminist conference. A closed-door meeting is established between Gloria and three of her guests: Aurore Amer, a French novelist; Lola Dhol, a Norwegian actress, once famous and scandalous; and Babette Cohen, a professor of Pied-Noir origin who has seamlessly integrated into the United States. They are at the age of taking stock. Their cohabitation will reveal their hopes and disillusionments, their ambitions and failures. Between the moment of awakening and the moment of departure, which will perhaps disperse them forever, a game of mirrors is established, revealing their antagonisms.
