This work was intended, conceived and produced by René Nelli in 1959, with the aim of offering the reader, in an accessible form - in French translation - but with a constant concern for historical rigor and critical intelligence, all the original texts written by the Cathars, which date from the 11th-14th centuries. Cathar Writings is composed of a Bogomil apocryphal text (The Interrogatio Johannis or Secret Supper), two treatises (Anonymous Treatise and Book of the Two Principles), three rituals (Latin ritual of Florence, Occitan rituals of Lyon and Dublin), texts presented, translated and commented by René Nelli.

These Cathar writings rectify with infinite precision and sensitivity the sometimes sweeping vision of the inquisitors, which was for a long time the only documentary source available to researchers. They fortunately complete the information where there was a gap, reorienting perspectives that seemed confusing. Described and decried as a Manichean heresy by medieval Catholic polemics, Catharism defines itself as a Christian requirement, in its own books.
