Title : Anthology of French Poetry - Georges Pompidou - book
Summary :
"What is poetry?... What is the soul?... When a poem, or simply a verse, provokes a sort of shock in the reader, pulls him out of himself, throwing him into a dream, or on the contrary forces him to descend deeper into himself until he is confronted with being and destiny, poetic success is recognized by these signs.
Such, of course, is the secret and excessive ambition of every anthology author. If he begins it for himself, it is for others that he finishes and publishes it. To choose everything that seems worthy and capable of provoking in the reader the shock of beauty, that is the object of his effort. This is to say that he betrays himself since he reveals the secret of what moves him.
My ambition is to give here the essence of our poetry, that is to say the most beautiful verses of the French language, those that I find such, without doubt, but with the hope that they really are.
