The author: Pierre Loti, Julien Viaud by his real name, was a naval officer, a great traveler, and above all a novelist. He was born on January 14, 1850, to Nadine Texier and Jean-Théodore Viaud, a Protestant family dominated by women - the mother and aunts - and of which Julien was the youngest son. Accepted into the Naval Academy in Paris, he went to sea in 1870 as a first-class midshipman, following the example of his beloved Gustave. He never stopped traveling the world by boat. His work, often autobiographical, takes us to Turkey (Aziyadé), Senegal (The Novel of a Spahi) or Japan (Madame Chrysanthemum, which was a huge success and inspired Puccini's Madame Butterfly). But the setting of his novels was not always so distant: with Pêcheurs d'Islande, he describes the life of Breton fishermen. Ramuntcho is set in this Basque land that Loti loved so much and where he ended his life. He was elected to the Académie française against Émile Zola.
