Title : The Taste of Dreams - Collectives - book Summary : In ancient texts, dreams were considered divine omens. Disdained by the Enlightenment, dreams made a strong entrance into literature with Romanticism: from Musset to Nerval and up to Lautréamont, they occupied a prominent place in the form of novelistic stories, poems, and plays. From the beginning of the 20th century, thanks to the contribution of psychoanalysis on the one hand, and the multitude of Surrealist productions on the other, dreams became the royal road leading to our unconscious. Imbued with fantasy and wonder, dreams renewed the imagination of poets and writers, but also of painters and filmmakers. To be explored in the company of Sigmund Freud, Henri Michaux, Marcel Proust, André Breton, Georges Bataille, Georges Perec, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Antonin Artaud, Fernando Pessoa, Michel Leiris, Marguerite Yourcenar, Louis Aragon, Jean Racine, Gustave Flaubert, Julien Gracq, Thomas Mann and many others. Title : A Summer with Voltaire - Jacques-Pierre Amette - book Summary : Despite the years, the carriages, the kisses, the bows, the eager servants, this July day was so stormy at the Château de Ferney that it enveloped everything in a misty air and drowsiness. Summer 1761: While in residence at Ferney, Voltaire receives two ravishing Italian actresses who have come to rehearse Le Fanatisme ou Mahomet, a play written twenty years earlier and highly criticized at the time. Among the guests is Count Fleckenstein, a Prussian officer sent by Frederick II to negotiate a treaty that would put an end to the Seven Years' War. Meanwhile, not far away, Rousseau triumphs with La Nouvelle Héloïse, which condemns this infamous entertainment: the theater... Title : My Mother's Castle - Marcel Pagnol - book Summary : The most beautiful book about childhood friendship: one morning while hunting in the hills, Marcel meets the little peasant, Lili des Bellons. His vacation and his whole life will be illuminated by it. A year after The Glory of My Father , Marcel Pagnol thought he was concluding his Childhood Memories with this castle of my mother (1958), the second part of what he considered a diptych, ending with the famous scene of the ferocious guard frightening the timid Augustine. Little Marcel, after the tenderness of his family, has discovered friendship with the marvelous Lili, undoubtedly the most endearing of his characters. The book ends with a melancholic epilogue, a poignant elegy to the time that has passed. Pagnol strikes the chords of a gravity to which he rarely accustomed his readers. "Hey! Friend!" I saw a boy my age looking at me sternly. "You mustn't touch other people's traps," he said. "A trap is sacred!" "I wasn't going to take it," I said. "I wanted to see the bird." He approached: he was a little peasant. He was dark, with a fine Provençal face, black eyes and long girlish eyelashes.  EAN: 9782877065085 Used book Book in good condition The book matches the photo

Title : A Country Outing - Guy de Maupassant - book Summary : Maupassant's works have tempted many filmmakers. They have found in them the opportunity to illustrate slices of life or to tell picturesque or pathetic stories, capable, by their human value, of interesting a wide audience. A Country Party is a particularly interesting work in this regard: this short story, of classical sobriety, is among the writer's best. And it so happens that it was adapted by one of our greatest filmmakers, Jean Renoir. This happy encounter gave birth to a remarkable film. This edition offers a parallel between the two works that allows for a better understanding of the specificity of these major arts: literature and cinema. In addition, it enlightens the reader on the complex problems of adapting written works to film. EAN: 9782253138051 Used book Book in good condition The book matches the photo

Title : The Taste of Summer - Collectives - book Summary : More than any other, summer is the season of abolished time, a promise constantly renewed, relegating to the sad winter the care of eternal regrets... This is undoubtedly why writers' summers are often the most beautiful. But this "beautiful" season is not so everywhere... In latitudes and climates other than ours, summer can be harsh. This is also what writers tell us elsewhere. A detour through the Russian steppe to the plains of the American South will provide us with proof of this. Scorching, Indian, deadly, gently sloping, southern, contrary, torrid, or rotten... it is summer in all its forms that Albert Camus, Jacques Lacarrière, Cesare Pavese, Marguerite Duras, Truman Capote, Sébastien Japrisot, Gustave Flaubert, Guy de Maupassant, Anton Chekhov, William Faulkner, Jean-Paul Sartre, Françoise Sagan, JMG Le Clézio, Patrick Modiano, Arthur Rimbaud, Antoine Blondin, Jean Giono, Colette and many others offer us in their wake... Title : I write to act - Life of Voltaire - Max Gallo - book Summary : Voltaire's statue and glory hide the man of flesh. It is this man that Max Gallo seeks to revive in this Life of Voltaire. From his birth to his death, at eighty-four years old, a decade before the Revolution, we see the emergence of a man determined to forge his destiny day after day, word after word. Dozens of tragedies, essays, tales, pamphlets, historical studies, and thousands of letters: this work, this life, reflects the entire 18th century, that of the Enlightenment, of the philosophical party, of the fight for the abolition of torture... But there is more. Max Gallo shows us other facets of the character: his ambition, his greed. Ruthless and contemptuous, grumpy, yet capable of passion for the "sublime Émilie." A man of contradictions, placing freedom above all else, Voltaire, dazzling with life, our necessary contemporary. EAN: 9782253128946 Used book Book in good condition The book matches the photo

Title : The Banquet - Phaedrus - book Summary : In The Banquet, the poet Agathon gives a feast to celebrate his victory in a poetry competition. This is an opportunity for each guest to praise Eros by presenting their vision of love. Following them, Socrates, who claims to be reporting the words of the foreigner Diotima, links love to the desire for immortality that animates all living beings. The praise of love then detaches itself from the sensible world to tend towards a new dimension, that of the Intelligible. It is also Eros that is discussed in the Phaedrus, where Plato distinguishes two kinds of love: vulgar love—selfish, jealous, tyrannical—and honest love, which corresponds to celestial Love. Human souls, which have only glimpsed the world of Ideas before incarnating in a body, retain a fleeting memory of Beauty. It is this search for glimpsed Beauty that would provoke the quest for love. Title : Three Tales - Gustave Flaubert - book Summary : A triple unity - both Trinity and triptych - Flaubert's "Three Tales" evoke a world where the divine presence is as if absent. Foreboding, but mysterious in "Hérodias"; scandalous and incomprehensible in "The Legend of Saint Julian the Hospitaller"; confused with superstition and reduced to simulacra in "A Simple Heart." Title : The Wyvern - Marcel Aymé - book Summary : Behind the viper appeared a young girl, with a robust body and a proud gait. Dressed in a white linen dress that stopped below the knee, she walked barefoot and bare-armed, her waist arched, with long strides. Her bronzed profile had a relief and a beauty that was a little masculine. On her very black hair, tied back in a crown, was placed a double silver twist, representing a thin serpent whose head, raised, held in its jaw a large oval stone, a limpid red. From the portraits that had been drawn for him and which he had until then believed to be fanciful, Arsène recognized the Vouivre. Title : Decameron - Boccaccio - book Summary : If, once again, storytellers are in fashion, the time has come to rediscover the first of them, Giovanni Boccaccio, who perhaps owes to the year of his birth – 1313! – one of the most brilliant literary fortunes of all time. Composed around 1350, translated throughout Europe, imitated, even plundered, for centuries, his Decameron had a posterity as prestigious as it was innumerable, from Chaucer to La Fontaine, from Molière to Potocki. Fleeing the plague that decimated Florence in 1348, seven young women and three young men found refuge in a sumptuous Tuscan villa. For ten days, punctuated by concerts, parties, and banquets, each will strive to entertain the others daily by inventing a tale. Neither emotion nor tragedy are absent from these hundred stories, but the overall tone, as we know, is rather gallantry, a gallantry that is prompt, natural, expeditious, and in any case not given to long sighs. "Anyone who wanted to reduce Boccaccio to the same modesty as Virgil would certainly do nothing worthwhile and would be sinning against decorum by taking it upon himself to observe it," remarks La Fontaine. Complete, faithful, precise, this translation has conformed to this wise advice. EAN: 9782253907022 Used book Book in good condition The book matches the photo

Title : Rousseau's Confessions. Complete Text of Books 1 to 4 - Marc Robert - book Summary : I am forming an enterprise which has never had an example and whose execution will have no imitators,” Rousseau proudly proclaims in his preamble, thereby showing the novelty and audacity of his autobiographical approach. For the writer, cornered by his detractors, feels obliged to justify himself: he will therefore say everything, even “the most shameful”! In search of coherence, of meaning, he starts from childhood to unravel the thread of his life, constantly trying to explain himself. The reader thus gains access to the secrets of his heart, to his misfortunes of course, but also to many moments of happiness, tender moments, sometimes funny moments. In a remarkably clear style, Jean-Jacques Rousseau recounts his life and his feelings. By telling the unvarnished story of his existence, he holds up a mirror to the reader in which it will not always be pleasant to recognize himself. This book offers: • the full text of books I to IV, • explanatory notes, • questionnaires throughout the text, • an educational tool including reports, documents on the work and its author, as well as a thematic route. Title : Colomba - And Ten Other Stories - Prosper Mérimée - book Summary : Reading Mérimée's short stories is like seeing an author reveal himself over the pages, identifying autobiographical elements, appreciating his erudition and the diversity of his sources of inspiration. This first volume brings together eleven short stories, arranged in chronological order of their writing. Some are well-known; others deserve to be better known. We find here a taste for travel and exoticism (Corsica, the Orient, Spain), meticulous psychological descriptions, a commitment against slavery, stories of honor and revenge, an attraction to mystery and fantasy. While the themes are varied, the writing always retains a great precision, which allows Mérimée to exercise a biting irony. Title : The Contemplations. Books IV-V - Victor Hugo - book Summary : "What are Les Contemplations? It is what one could call, if the word had no pretension, the Memoirs of a Soul" (Preface). Few poetic works refer more openly to their historical and biographical context than this one. Published in 1856, Les Contemplations bears the mark of a double mourning: the loss of the poet's daughter, Léopoldine, and the symbolic death represented by exile. But what is at stake touches on the power of poetic speech: through contemplation, plunged into the depths of oneself from which poetry must emerge, Hugo makes heartbreak a creative act and the lyrical word the instrument of a search for the absolute.
